Nitric acid is a strong oxidizing and corrosive acid. Nitric acid is easily soluble in water, at room temperature its solution colorless transparent. The properties of the aqueous solutions with different concentrations are different. The concentrated market nitric acid is azeotropic mixture with a mass fraction of 69.2%(about 16mol/L), and the mass fraction large enough (the market concentration is above 95%) is called fuming nitric acid. Nitric acid is easy to decompose by light. It should be stored in a brown bottle in the dark and away from light. It can also be stored in a frosted plastic bottle (not recommended). Nitric acid is mainly produced by ammonia-oxidation method in industry, used for making fertilizer, explosive, nitrate, etc. In organic chemistry, the mixture of concentrated nitric acid and concentrated sulfuric acid is an important nitration reagent. Molecular formula is HNO3, concentrated nitric acid and concentrated hydrochloric acid can be mixed by 1:3 volume ratio to make highly corrosive aqua regia. The anhydride of nitric acid is nitrous oxide (N2O5). |
