Potassium nitrate is an anhydrous white powder that does not delightfully dissolve in air. Sometimes grayish because of impurities. The density was 2.11g/cm3334℃ melting, higher than 338℃, decomposed into potassium nitrite and oxygen was released. The solubility of potassium nitrate decreases with the increase of nitric acid concentration, and then increases when it reaches the lowest value. The solubility of potassium nitrate in water increases with the increase of temperature. The pure product contains 46.58% potassium oxide and 13.85% nitrogen. Potassium nitrate is easily soluble in water, and its solubility increases sharply with the increase of temperature. It can dissolve 31.2 grams per 100 grams of water at 20℃ and 247 grams at 100℃.
Application
1. Used as an analytical reagent and oxidant, as well as in the synthesis and preparation of potassium salt.
2. Used in the food industry as a hair colorant, coloring agent, antimicrobial agent and preservative, such as for cured meat and as a preservative in luncheon meat.
3. is the manufacture of black gunpowder, such as mine gunpowder, ignition wire, firecracker and other raw materials. Also used in fireworks to produce purple sparks. Mechanical heat treatment for quenching in salt baths. The ceramic industry is used to make enamels. Used as a glass clarifier. Used for manufacturing automobile lamp glass case, optical glass picture tube glass case and so on. The pharmaceutical industry is used to produce penicillin potassium salt, rifampicin. Used for making cigarette paper. Used as a catalyst. Dressing agent. Used as a compound fertilizer for crops and flowers.
4. Potassium nitrate is also permitted as a hair color in China. It is reduced to potassium nitrite in meat products due to bacterial action and plays the role of color protection and inhibition of bacteria. China stipulates that it can be used in meat products with a maximum usage of 0.5g/kg and residues of 0.03g/kg.
5. Used for making fireworks, matches, ceramic glaze, fertilizer, etc.
6. Industrial potassium nitrate is also widely used in the production process of reinforced glass.
Notes
Operating precautions: Closed operation, enhanced ventilation. Operators must be specially trained and strictly abide by the operating rules. It is recommended that operators wear hoods with electric air supply filter respirators, polyethylene gas suits and neoprene gloves. Keep away from fires and heat sources. Smoking is strictly prohibited in the workplace. Keep away from flammable and combustible materials. Avoid dust generation. Avoid contact with reductants, acids and active metal powders. Handle with care to prevent damage to packing and container. Equipped with the appropriate variety and quantity of fire fighting equipment and leakage emergency treatment equipment. Empty containers may retain harmful substances.
Storage Precautions: Store in a cool, dry and well ventilated warehouse. Keep away from fire and heat. The storage temperature shall not exceed 30℃, and the relative humidity shall not exceed 80%. Should be stored separately with reducing agent, acid, combustible, active metal powder, avoid mixing storage. The storage area should be equipped with suitable materials for leakage.
